Nepean Chardonnay 2007

Tasting Notes

This is the inaugural release of our flagship chardonnay from an extremely low-yielding vintage. The resulting wine is very concentrated. Mid gold in colour, it has a complex nose of ripe melon fruits, peach, pear and nectarine, with grilled hazelnuts and gentle vanilla-scented French oak spice. Plenty of power and volume on the palate, flavours of peach and pear fruit here with some gentle savoury nuts and mealy nuances, the acidity kicks in nicely and really draws deep through rich flavour and texture, bringing balance and freshness to the finish.

Viticulture:

The ‘Nepean Block’ has been identified for producing wonderful fruit characters. We cane prune to ensure even bud spacing and train to a thin VSP canopy. Summer pruning & leaf removal, on the southern side, permits plenty of sunlight to the fruit. The fruit is hand-picked early in the morning & dispatched to the winery for immediate attention.

Harvest date: 8th March.

Vinification:

The hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed & cold settled before being run into barrel for fermentation. It was stirred on lees for three months to promote oak integration and textural complexity. The small volume of Nepean chardonnay was sourced from a selection of the newer oak barrels. Fined and bottled 20th January.
